Measuring your kitchen correctly is the most important part of planning a new layout, getting a renovation quote, or ordering cabinetry. At Allura Living, we’ve made the process simple—even if you’ve never measured a kitchen before.
Follow the steps below and you’ll have everything you need for an accurate design consultation.
A clear, precise floor plan ensures:
Your new kitchen fits perfectly into the space
Appliances align properly with cabinets
Plumbing and electrical points are correctly positioned
You receive an accurate quote with no surprises
Installation runs smoothly and on time
Whether you’re building, renovating, or upgrading an investment property, measuring your kitchen only takes 20–30 minutes.
You don’t need much—just:
Tape measure (5m+ recommended)
Pencil or pen
Notebook or printed grid paper
A smartphone (photos are extremely helpful)
A small step ladder (optional)
Start with a rough sketch. It doesn’t need to be perfect—straight lines and labelled walls are enough.
Include:
Windows
Doors
Existing cabinets
Bulkheads
Pantries
Appliances
Any structural features (columns, nib walls, service ducts)
Tip: Mark each wall as Wall A, Wall B, Wall C to stay organised.
Measure every wall from corner to corner—even if you think the cabinets won’t reach that area.
Record:
Full wall length
Any breaks (windows, doors, openings, nib walls)
Accuracy tip: Measure twice.
Ceiling heights vary in apartments, older homes, and homes with bulkheads.
Measure in three spots:
Front of the room
Middle
Back wall
Record the lowest height.
These openings affect where cabinets and appliances can go.
Write down:
Width
Height
Distance from floor to bottom of window
Distance from window edge to corner of the room
Door swing direction (left or right)
Note the location of:
Plumbing: sink, dishwasher, fridge water point
Electrical: power points, cooktop wiring, oven, rangehood duct
Gas: cooktop or oven connection
Ventilation: rangehood ducting outlet
Mark each service point on your sketch.
Photos are extremely helpful for our designers.
If you are keeping your existing appliances, measure:
Width
Height
Depth
Common items include:
Fridge
Oven
Cooktop (gas or electric)
Microwave
Dishwasher
Rangehood
If you are planning to buy new appliances, provide the brand + model, or the standard size you prefer (e.g., 600mm oven).
These details help refine your design:
Ceiling bulkheads
Air-conditioning pipes
Structural columns
Low beams
Skirting boards
Light switches
Security panels
Internal brick vs gyprock walls (if known)
Take photos of each obstacle.
Take clear photos from:
Each corner of the kitchen
Front-on photo of every wall
Close-ups of power points, plumbing, and appliances
Ceiling and floor
More detail = more accurate design.
